Action Groups

Study/Action Groups research the issues that impact us with the goal of applying the research to our local situation. For instance, the Energy Group studies what does oil dependence means for Wayland, and what Wayland can do in the face of rising prices and decreasing supplies. Other examples for Study Groups are Climate ChangeEconomyFoodWaterWaste, Youth, Art, Elders, Community.

Wayland already has a vibrant, hardworking and effective Energy Initiatives Advisory Committee (Link to their Town website). Transition Wayland supports the hard work of the Wayland Energy Initiatives Advisory Committee. They have recently applied to the Metropolitan Area Planning Council’s (MAPC) Local Energy Action Program (LEAP).

We are working on three energy projects:

  1. Household Energy Efficiency Tours (HEET) program, which will demonstrate how we can reduce our usage of electricity, gas and oil by retrofitting our homes and installing alternative energy like solar and geothermal. This is done through tours of houses in our town, and their owners make themselves available to give advice.
  2. Neighbors to Neighbors Program: a culturally and spiritually deeper approach to how we relate, as families, to the Earth and our responsibility as stewards.
  3. We also envision workshops and barn raisings, e.g., how to insulate, how to build a solar thermal collector, and neighbors helping to get tasks accomplished.

Let us know it you're interested in helping with any of these programs.

Climate Change is complex and frightening, but let's not let that daunt us. Together we can study the causes, the effects, and the solutions.
Here's a page to begin with.

We already offer the Treading Water event for groups who want to host an introductory presentation. Please let us know if you are interested.

We also envision any number of workshops and action plans. Let us know it you're interested in this.
